In this invited speech Dr Claudia Pagliari gave a broad overview of some of the ways in which health informatics is manifesting during the pandemic and the lessons arising, from a global perspective. She examined some of the different ways in which data, apps and other technologies are bring used in pandemic monitoring and response, cultural variations in acceptance of surveillance; how mobile tools for managing diseases like Ebola are translating to Covid19, the 'infodemic' of fake news and how the World Health Organisation is seeking to address this; the growth of global scientific collaboration around viral genomics and vaccines, and some of the geopolitical and commercial influences hindering these efforts.
