Women in Sound Women on Sound

Description

On October 13th of 2015 over 60 people attended the first Women in Sound Women on Sound event, a symposium held at the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts. WISWOS hosted art works from national and international sound and audio visual artists, and presented a diverse range of paper presentations from a variety of artists, researchers, performers, producers, programmers, engineers, acousticians and theorists. The subjects on the day ranged from the slave labour of women working in developing countries in the production of music technology, to exploring the importance of silence within radio plays, the gradual exclusion of women from the fields of music and sonic arts, and the impact this has on the education of young girls, to women in live coding from the UK to Mexico. Each paper exploring in some way the visibility of women in the field of sound whether through highlighting their own and others practices, or the role of women in general. Additionally, we held an evening concert on the 13th of October. A selection of the curated exhibition was exhibited until the 16th of October.
