World AIDS Day 2024

Description

Did you know that Edinburgh was once facing a public health crisis as the ‘AIDS capital of Europe’? This World AIDS Day 2024, we are encouraging Edinburgh to come together to discuss HIV/AIDS: a global issue with a local story. We will hear from those who treated the first patients with AIDS in the city alongside those working on HIV prevention and treatment today. The Scottish Government have committed to reaching no new HIV transmissions by 2030. We will discuss #GetToZero with Waverley Care, who have been leading the community response since 1989, and staff from the Chalmers Sexual Health Centre. The event will provide attendees with an education about HIV/AIDS, historical context, stigma and research. We will discuss the global and local influence of HIV/AIDS. Our aim is to provide an inclusive event for everyone to learn and share perspectives. At the end, we will screen Lance Bang’s 2010 Documentary The Lazarus Project, which highlights the lifesaving impact of anti-retroviral therapy in a community in Zambia (30 minutes). We hope this event will provide a starting point for participants to think about HIV/AIDS and resources for continued learning will be provided.
