Deborah Fry receives funding to study how teachers could help prevent bullying in schools

Press/Media: Research

An MSCA American fellow (CIG), Deborah Fry, is now conducting a large study on bullying at the University of Edinburgh, where she is a Lecturer in Child Protection, in the Education, Community and Society Institute. Deborah wants to tackle bullying by directly addressing teachers and the ways that they can improve their lack of confidence in responding to bullying practices.

Prior to joining the University of Edinburgh, Deborah was Research Director at the New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault. She has a comprehensive experience in researching issues of violence within school settings, and she is now dealing both with the possibility of implementing appropriate response systems and the effectiveness of existing interventions. Her study takes particularly into account teachers' attitude towards bullying practices, in order to train educators accordingly to prevent and respond to child abuse and neglect. Deborah is working beside a group of students in their final year of teacher training at the University of Edinburgh’s Moray House School of Education. 200 teachers are being surveyed, in order to assess their attitudes and to provide them with support.

Deborah has recently obtained additional funding from UBS Optimus Foundation. She will work with the Child Protection Network Foundation and the Philippine Department of Education to further explore the main outcomes of her work funded by her MSCA grant, with the aim of implementing and testing a school-based intervention (including a teacher training component) in two schools in Manila, Philippines, for the prevention of sexual abuse.
