Press/Media: Expert Comment

Description

On 16th September, Edinburgh Law School's Navraj Singh Ghaleigh, Senior Lecturer in Climate Law, gave an interview with Sky News concerning energy firms that are seeking to sue a variety of European governments under international investment law, principally the Energy Charter Treaty.

The Sky News report revealed that five big energy companies are suing governments for 18 billion US dollars (around 13 billion GBP), for possible loss of earnings due to climate action. In all cases, the firms are arguing that environmental measures taken by the governments have unfairly affected their investments, often coal based. Navraj set out the relevant legal context, and explored the burgeoning phenomenon of climate litigation.
