Press/Media: Research

Description

The Royal Society of Edinburgh's 2004 Gannochy Trust Innovation award has been given to Dr Ian Underwood, co-founder of MicroEmissive Displays (MED).

The prize recognises Underwood's contribution to the development of highly innovative optoelectronic and display devices in Scotland. The culmination is MED's ultra-miniature television-quality display built on a silicon chip.

Dr Underwood's early innovations contributed to the formation of Micropix Technologies (now CRL Opto) and he co-founded MicroEmissive Displays (MED) to commercialise further innovations. MED recently announced its first major order and plans to float on the Alternative Investment Market (AIM).

The innovator title carries a cheque for GBP50,000 and a specially-commissioned gold medal. Underwood's company, MED, won this year's European Semiconductor/Siltronic Start-up Award.
