Abstract

Item-level catalogue of the field and transcription notebooks of folklorist, antiquarian and exciseman Alexander Carmichael (1832-1912) (Edinburgh University Library Collection ref. GB 237 Coll-97): an exceptionally important resource in unlocking, for audiences both within and without academia, a hitherto neglected collection of oral tradition and popular culture of international significance. The catalogue has been created using EAD (Encoded Archival Description) to ISAD(G) (General International Standard Archival Description) standards. Each notebook has been treated as if it is a separate series within the collection and each item within the notebook has been described at item level. The catalogue links related material together and is indexed according to subject, person, place, family, organisation and genre at all levels of description. People, families and organisations have been indexed according to ISAAR CPF (International Standard Archival Authority Record For Corporate Bodies, Persons and Families) and National Council on Archives Rules for the Construction of Personal, Place and Corporate Names. There are a total of 2763 items catalogued containing 3227 separate index terms. The catalogue links to the full-text TEI transcriptions, digital images and EAC (Encoded Archival Context) biographies created during the project. The catalogue is searchable by simple and advanced searches, as well as through the A-Z indexes or the Browse Collection facility. The catalogue was developed in conjunction with developers at EDINA, the national data centre.
