Heating and Cooling Degree Day projections for the UK: version 2

Dataset

Description

Degree days are calculated from temperature data from HadRM3-PPE (http://catalogue.ceda.ac.uk/uuid/f9c7d70b0e6d4c31c067e75ab67cb3cc) and EObs version 12 (http://www.ecad.eu/download/ensembles/download.php).

NetCDF files were created using IDL. A list of software for viewing and analysing NetCDF files is available at http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/netcdf/software.html .

Information regarding variables in netcdf file: Variables are 30 year climatologies for each calendar month, and take names H* for heating degree days and C* for cooling degree days, as follows:-

HObs, Cobs: HDD and CDD calculated from observed daily temperatures in historical period 1981-2010. // Hppe, Cppe: HDD and CDD calculated from HadRM3-PPE daily temperatures in historical period. // Hfut, Cfut: HDD and CDD calculated from HadRM3-PPE daily temperatures in future period (2040-2069) with no correction. // HdelI, CdelI: HDD and CDD projections for future period calculated by the additive index correction method, whereby the model bias in the index from the historical period is removed from the projected value. // HdelIPROP, CdelIPROP: HDD and CDD projections for future period calculated by the proportional index correction method, whereby the raw projected value is divided by the historical proportional bias. // Hbc, Cbc: HDD and CDD projections for future period, calculated by the underlying bias correction method: the projected temperature time series is mean- and variance- corrected. HDD and CDD are calculated from the corrected series. // Hdelta, Cdelta: HDD and CDD projections for future period, calculated byt the underlying change method: the historical observed temperature time series is variance- and mean- mapped according to the change projected by the model. HDD and CDD are calculated from the projected series. // For more detail, see publication.

Abstract

NOTE: This dataset replaces version 1 of the same time, which has an error in the fields Hbc,Cbc,Hdelta and Cdelta.

This dataset was produced for the study "What is the uncertainty in degree day projections due to different calibration methodologies?" (Holmes et al, 2017, Journal of Climate). Heating and Cooling degree day projections are calculated using various different calibration strategies, on a month-by-month basis and on the 25km grid of the HadRM3-PPE model projections.
