Abstract

The qualitative dataset includes field notes from observations and anonymised transcripts of interviews (27), focus groups (14), memos, and documents to theorise the process of approaching families of potential organ donors in Chile. Seventy-one participants' experiences are part of the dataset, which includes 51 healthcare professionals working in two hospitals in Chile's capital and the national organ donation coordination (e.g. nurse organ donor coordinators, ICU nurses, nursing assistants, physicians and staff), and 20 family members of 14 family units, including donor and non-donor families. The bilingual dataset consists of data in English (field notes and memos) and Spanish (interviews, focus groups and documents), gathered face-to-face between 2017 and 2019 using the PI's grounded theory practices and strategies. Due to the nature of the study, the dataset contains potentially identifying or sensitive patient/institutional information, which implies that participants could be identifiable. As a result, data were managed as strictly confidential. The dataset was developed as part of a doctoral study submitted for a PhD at the University of Edinburgh titled "Reading the family: a constructivist grounded theory on approaching families of potential organ donors".
