Abstract

This collection forms part of a community of linguistic datasets https://datashare.ed.ac.uk/handle/10283/8573.

Salawati [ISO 369-3: xmx, Glottocode: made1253] is a string of closely related dialects, spoken by fewer than 3,400 people in villages across Salawati island. There are six different Salawati varieties: Butlih, Fiat, Kawit, Rajau, Tepin, and Wail. The local context on Salawati island is highly multilingual: besides Salawati, other languages spoken on the island include the closely related Ma'ya [slz, maya1282]; the less-closely related Biak [bhw, biak1248]; and the unrelated West Bird's Head language Seget [sbg, sege1235]. More recently, migrants from further west in Indonesia have settled on Salawati, many of them speakers of Javanese. In the villages in which these recordings were made, Salawati is endangered: only adults use the language on a daily basis. The youngest generation are monolingual in Papuan Malay.

This collection contains data from the Butlih, Tepin, and Wail dialects. For each dialect, there is a list of basic words (150-350 words, recorded in isolation, utterance-final, and utterance-medial contexts); for Butlih and Tepin, there is data on the verbal subject agreement and possessive-marking paradigms; and for Butlih, there is data elicited using the Conversational Questionnaire method. The collection includes material from both male and female speakers, all of whom are in their 40s and older. Typically, each item contains an audio recording (.wav), the accompanying field notes (.pdf), a metadata file (.txt), and a record of speaker consent (.pdf); many items also include a Praat TextGrid. As well as the raw recordings of the individual sessions, the segmented audio files of some sessions are provided as a separate item, to facilitate searches on a particular word or construction.
