Organisation profile

The History Subject Area at the University of Edinburgh has over 75 full-time academic members of staff, covering a large and diverse range of research interests from the Fall of Rome to contemporary indigenous social movements in Latin America.

Our historians come together in the two research centres based in the School of History, Classics and Archaeology: Centre for the Study of Modern and Contemporary History and the Edinburgh Centre for Global History.  We are also partners in the Centre for Late Antique, Islamic and Byzantine Studies and the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies. A strong and vibrant set of research groups also brings together academic staff and postgraduates for collaboration, discussion and debate. Subjects covered include economic and social history, history of science, medicine and technology, intellectual history, Irish history, material culture, political history and Scottish history.
