Director: Professor Margaret Frame

Formerly the Institute of Genetics and Molecular Medicine (IGMM), the Institute of Genetics and Cancer (IGC) at The University of Edinburgh is an exciting development bringing together the MRC Human Genetics Unit, the Centre for Genomics and Experimental Medicine and the Cancer Research UK Edinburgh Centre.

This partnership constitutes one of the largest aggregates of human molecular genetics research capacity in the UK, and brings together over 500 research and support scientists in a single, scientific endeavour.

A principal aim of the Institute is to develop fully integrated, multi-disciplinary research programmes across the whole spectrum of basic, clinical and translational research. By providing access to a wide range of specialised facilities and services within a multi-disciplinary environment, IGC supports and adds value to existing programmes of research.

The IGC's priorities are basic through to clinical research across the major themes of:

  • Brain Biology and Disease
  • Cancer
  • Common Disease Genetics
  • Paediatrics
  • All underpinned by strong basic science
