Administrative Roles

Academic Director, Academic Foundation Programme

Associate Director, Edinburgh Clinical Academic Training Programme

I am a Reader in the Centre for Cardiovascular Science and an Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Endocrinology at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh. I qualified in Medicine at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and undertook initial paediatric training in South West England. I relocated to Edinburgh to complete a PhD funded by a British Heart Foundation Junior Clinical Research Fellowship, supervised by Professors Brian Walker and Jonathan Seckl. Following completing training in paediatric endocrinology as a Clinical Lecturer in the Department of Child Life and Health in Edinburgh, I took up an MRC Clinician Scientist Fellowship followed by a Scottish Senior Clinical Fellowship.

My research in a nutshell

My research group has a focus on understanding the interactions between the environment and the epigenome, particularly DNA methylation. Our work includes studies aimed at increasing our understanding of how the environment in early life leads to an increased risk of metabolic and neurodevelopmental disease in later life. We were amongst the first to show that these effects can be transmitted across generations through non-genomic mechanisms. We are also involved in studies aimed at understanding how preterm birth leads to long-term effects on neurodevelopment. Finally, we are undertaking studies aimed at delineating the effects of obesity and metabolic dysfunction on DNA methylation.
