Personal profile

Biography

Andrew Jarman graduated with a 1st class degree in Biochemistry from the University of Oxford. He completed a DPhil in human globin gene regulation at the MRC Molecular Haematology Unit, Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine, University of Oxford, under supervision of Doug Higgs. After a short period as a postdoctoral assistant at the Institute of Molecular Medicine (Oxford), he obtained a NATO postdoctoral fellowship to join the lab of Yuh Nung and Lily Jan (University of California, San Francisco). After four years, he was recruited to establish his own group at the Wellcome Centre for Cell Biology (University of Edinburgh), where he spent 9 years as a Wellcome Senior Research Fellow. In 2003 he moved to the Centre for Integrative Physiology, initially as a Wellcome Senior Fellow and Reader, and subsequently as Professor of Developmental Cell Biology.

Research Interests

Gene regulation, cell biology and physiology of the generation and maintenance of mechanosensory cells required for hearing

My research in a nutshell

Our senses rely on sense organs that contain highly specialised cells that convert different kinds of stimuli into electrical activity that can then be sent to and processed by our brain. We are particularly interested in the auditory sensory cells of the inner ear, impairment or loss of which leads to deafness. We use zebrafish and fruitfly model organisms to determine how auditory cells are made and how they function. Understanding the gene regulatory network of auditory cell generation and maintenance is a key step in developing new therapeutic approaches to prevent or reverse deafness.
