Andy Hopker is a member of the clinical teaching staff, working in the Farm Animal Practice. He delivers hands on clinical training to final year students through examining and treating cases through the ambulatory farm animal pratice and hospital.
Andy teaches on the fourth year farm animal clinical course, delivering theoretical and practical knowledge to our students, as well as farm animal practical classes for third and fourth year BVM&S students.
Andy recieved the prestigous R(D)SVS award 'Rising Star in Teaching' in 2015 and has been nominated by the students for EUSA teaching awards as best overall teacher in veterinary medicine in every year 2014- 2018, excellence in peer support in 2014, and best personal tutor in 2018.
Andy has a particular interest in animal keeper and veterinary education programmes in the developing world and how they can be used to help lift people out of poverty, improve food security and animal welfare and help to protect the natural environment. Andy is currently undertaking an PhD in this area, designing, delivering and assessing rural education projects in India in conjunction with our NGO, academic and commercial partners.
Prior to starting work at R(D)SVS Andy worked in mixed practice for ten years, including a twelve months working for veterinary NGO's in India.

Andy have a particular interest in veterinary and animal keeper education in developing countries and it can be used to improve prosperity and food security, helping to lift people out of poverty, while at the same time improving aninmal welfare and helping to protect the natural environment . Andy is undertaking an PhD in this area, designing, delivering and assessing education programmes in rural India in association with our NGO, academic and commercial partners.
Andy is very interested in how we can help to prepare our students for clinical practice and is researching teaching methods to enhance our undergraduate experience.
Andy also undertakes clinical research into interesting and unusal cases and disease outbreaks, in conjunction with departmental colleagues and collaberators such as SRUC.
Currently Andy is involved with collaberations with The Corbett Foundation, India Project for Animals and Nature, Worldwide Veterinary Service and SRUC, as well as collaberative activity with several Veterinary Colleges in India.
