Personal profile

Biography

I qualified from the University of Cambridge in Veterinary Medicine in 1999 after a first degree in Physiological Sciences  from the University of Oxford.  After a year in general practice I joined  R(D)SVS as a lecturer in exotic animal and wildlife medicine in 1992 and have over 20 years experience as a clinician working with exotic animals and wildlife. I established and lead the Exotic Animal and Wildlife Service and was head veterinary surgeon for the Royal Zoologial Society of Scotland's Edinburgh Zoo (1992-2009). I am a RCVS and European Recognisied Specilaist in Zoo and Wildlief Medicine and my focus now is on wildlife and conservation medicine. I am also Director of Postgraduate Taught programmes at the Easter Bush Campus and am Programme Director for the MVetSci in Conservation Medicine

Wildlife diseases and epidemiology; Conservation Medicine

Current Research Interests

Red squirrel surveillance and infectious diseases (squirrelpox, squirrel leprosy); Scottish wildcat conservation and infectious diseases; a novel Amphibiocystidium disease in palmate newts on the Isle of Rum; Scottish raptor mortality; infectious diseases of pine martens.
