Biography

Dr Ashley Simpson is the Co-Head: Institute for Language Education.

I specialise in Intercultural Education, Intercultural Communication, Critical approaches to Democracy and Human Rights in Education, and, Language and Political Economy amongst other aspects. I have experience of working in higher education institutions in China, Finland and Russia.    

I have published extensively on Intercultural Communication Education. I am the author of the monograph (2024) Interculturality and the Munchausen Effect: On the need to rethink the Speaking Subject and Community in Interaction (New York: Routledge) and the co-authored monograph (2021) Interculturality and the Political within Education (London: Routledge). I have also co-edited the volumes (2020) The Meaning of Criticality in Education Research: Reflecting on Critical Pedagogy (London: Palgrave Macmillan), and, (2020) Intercultural Competence in the Work of Teachers: Confronting Ideologies and Practices (London: Routledge).

My research on Intercultural Communication Education has been published in international journals such as, British Journal of Educational Studies; Compare: A Journal of Comparative and International Education; Frontiers of Education in China; Intercultural Communication Education; International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism; Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development; and, Palgrave Communications, amongst others.

I currently serve on the editorial board of the journal Pedagogy, Culture & Society and I was co-editor of the International Journal of Bias, Identity and Diversities in Education (IJBIDE) from 2019-2022. 

I previously held the role of Programme Director of the MSc Language and Intercultural Communication and I previously held a position on leadership team of the Language(s), Interculturality and Literacies Thematic Research Hub. 

I also hold a Visiting Professor position at the School of Languages, Literature and Law, Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology, China.
