My clinical academic ophthalmology profile spans basic and applied research, delivering grant-funded and commercial clinical trials grants, extensive high impact peer-reviewed publications, building and leading multidisciplinary teams and creating a portfolio of postgraduate educational programmes.

I am Chair of clinical academic ophthalmology at the University of Edinburgh, established the Edinburgh eye research program and grown a team of senior lecturers/lecturers/post-docs/RAs/PhD students with colleagues in medicine, computational science and engineering. The outputs of this program have led to new non-invasive ways to probe the lens and retinal signals of neurodegeneration, novel discoveries in corneal disease and advances in cataract and macular degeneration treatments.

My activities in education and public engagement deliver ophthalmic education for the local community, national bodies and a global studentship.

I have published over 390 research papers, book chapters and books including a best-selling student text (3rdd edition this year) and articles in Nature Genetics, Nature Communications, Scientific Reports, the New England Journal of Medicine, Brain and BMJ.

My current interdisciplinary research interests are focussed on photobiological mechanisms of eye disease, novel tools in lens and retinal diagnostics, ocular imaging and inherited retinal dystrophies, h index 60, >15,400 citations.

I am the recent past chair Medical Research Foundation and current Chair Scientific Advisory Panel Moorfields Eye Charity, co-PI for the UK Vison Research Consortium and FFS-funded DTP, fundholder of the Eye Research Fund Specific Endowments, lead post programmes in ophthalmology and the Eye Research Lab, Edinburgh.
