Research Interests

My research focuses on how our research culture and the research environment in which we evolve affect our research practice. My time is split between the School of Geosciences and the Institute for Academic Development.

My research background is in snow modelling. After my PhD during which I worked on the process representation of snow-vegetation interactions in snow models, my research increasingly focused on uncertainties and errors in snow models. More recently, my interests have broadened from scientific errors in models to human errors in our scientific outputs. I am interested in how the decisions, assumptions and biases researchers make and have influence the interpretation of their research findings.

I am also undertaking a secondment at IAD that supports the delivery of the Concordat for Researchers. To this end, I investigated how to improve redeployment for research staff at risk of redundancy. I am currently investigating the circumstances behind the career path of researchers in long-term employment on short-term contracts.
