Personal profile

Research Interests

My research interests lie in the field of Latin American film studies, with a particular emphasis on the political work of cinema and its relationship to cultural memory. I joined the University of Edinburgh as Chancellor’s Fellow in September 2013 and completed my PhD at the University of Liverpool in 2009.

I have worked on women’s cinema from Latin America, Colombian cinema, and Indigenous and Afrodescendant filmmaking and media. My doctoral thesis focused on postdictatorship Argentine and Brazilian women’s film production, and examinined the representation of the cinematic body in relation to the repressive regimes experienced in both countries.

From 2009-2013, I worked as Postdoctoral Researcher on the European Research Council project ‘Indigeneity in the Contemporary World: Performance, Politics, Belonging’ project, hosted at Royal Holloway, University of London. In addition to personal research, this project involved the staging of a major international exhibition, EcoCentrix: Indigenous Arts, Sustainable Acts, for which I worked as Film Associate. You can learn more about the exhibition here: EcoCentrix Exhibition video

My ongoing research explores authorship and authority in relation to Indigenous film production in Latin America. This work considers the political and aesthetic contributions of documentary and fiction films that are produced by, or in some cases in collaboration with, Indigenous filmmakers and communities. In particular I am interested in issues surrounding intercultural collaborations and aesthetics, and the ways in which specific and diverse cultural repertoires are transmitted through film and circulate on an international platform.

I have an ongoing relationship with the Corporación Afrocolombiana de Desarrollo Social y Cultural (CARABANTÚ) and their annual FICCA Kunta Kinte film festival. Our collaborative research has centred on the role film and media can play in connecting Afrodescendant peoples. You can find out more about our work with the Raizal-Black Creole peoples of San Andrés Archipelago and the Nicaraguan Caribbean Coast here: Creole Connections website

I speak French, Spanish and Portuguese and welcome enquiries related to Indigenous and Afrodescendant filmmaking and Latin American film production more generally.
