Biography

Chase Ledin is a Lecturer in Social Science and Medicine at the University of Edinburgh. He received a PhD from the University of Edinburgh.

Research Interests

Chase is a social scientist working in public health and medicine. His work broadly explores social aspects of HIV/AIDS, bacterial STIs, sexual health, and antibiotic resistance and stewardship in the UK and Europe. He is especially interested in the role of sociotechnical and biomedical innovation in shaping experiences and practices of sexual health in society.

More specifically, Chase is interested in the sociology and history of scientific knowledge, including the social effects of medical knowledge, authority and expertise in the shaping of sexual health and wellbeing. Chase's work principally draws from and contributes to the disciplines of science and technology studies (STS), queer/feminist science studies, science communication, and medical/health sociology.

Chase's current research explores the social effects and experiences of antibiotic use within sexual communities. This work interrogates the role of social norms around 'licit' and 'illicit' use of antibiotics, particularly through the emergent use of doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (DoxyPEP) for the prevention of syphilis and chlamydia. This work also examines how antibiotic stewardship is constructed within sexual communities - and how local, national and global stewardship behaviours impact sexual cultures. You can learn more about this work on the Engaging DoxyPEP in Scotland website.

Previously, Chase's research has explored the social construction of HIV/AIDS disease elimination as a public health programme, and the impact of disease elimination paradigms on the social practices of sexual communities. He has also explored sociotechnical imaginaries of sexual health futures in the UK, using participatory creative methods to co-produce alternative social conditions for both healthcare services and sexual community practices/relations.
