Clare's research interests include methods of power-sharing in deeply divided places, human rights and equality, legislative studies, gender studies, constitutional design, and elections within the UK. She also researches and writes on Public Accounts Committees and financial scrutiny in legislatures.
In particular, she is an internationally renowned expert on politics in and of Northern Ireland, and has worked extensively on Brexit, constitutional future(s) in the UK, and British-Irish relations.
Her teaching areas to date have included UK and EU constitutional law, UK politics, conflict transformation, territorial politics, gender politics and institutions.
Clare completed her PhD at Queen's University Belfast, on the topic of consociationalism and equality within the European Union. She was a Visiting Scholar at the University of Antwerp during this time, and was awarded the Political Studies Association's Elizabeth Wiskemann Prize for best thesis in the (In)equality and Social Justice category.
Prior to joining the University of Edinburgh, she held positions at Newcastle University and the University of Liverpool.
Clare is a frequent contributor to national and international television, radio, and print media, particularly in relation to Northern Ireland, elections, Brexit, and current affairs.
