Accepting PhD Students
Dr Pernet is a senior academic fellow at Edinburgh Imaging, managing, coordinating and facilitating functional MRI research on the 4 research dedicated scanners. He also pursues research in methods and applications for translational (research-->clinic) brain imaging.
Dr Pernet obtained a PhD in Cognitive Neuropsychology from the University of Toulouse III in France where he was working with Dr JF Demonet and Dr P Celsis. He moved next to Finland (Prof R. Salmelin) then Glasgow (Prof B Belin) where he was respectively post-doc fellow and post-doc RA. In 2007 he joined the Brain Research Imaging Center in Edinburgh as fMRI lead for SINAPSE (Scottish Imaging Network A Platform for Scientific Excellence = coordination of some fMRI activities across Scotland), then became academic fellow.
• Methods for translational imaging: with the development of brain imaging technologies, there are many new challenges related to data analysis. A large part of my research activities regards the development of new methods for EEG (BBSRC, ESRC, Royal Society funded) and MRI (core funding CRUK/ECMC Edinburgh, INCF) with, in mind, use for single subjects/patients and the distribution of these methods through open source toolboxes.
• Applications for translational imaging. Many brain imaging methods have been developed to study the normal brain and a major challenge is to translate these discoveries and methods to clinical settings. My research aims at implementing such knowledge to benefit patients, with as primary target patients with brain tumours: (i) using functional MRI as a presurgical tool, (ii) using advanced imaging for enhanced tissue segmentation (iii) data sharing and good practices for clinical imaging (European Network for Brain Imaging of Tumour (www.enbit.ac.uk) and OHBM clinical special interest group.
• Transparent and open neuroimaging: Reproducibility practices, open science, data sharing and good practices. I have been involved in the international reproducibility project in psychology working on various committees and data analyses, publications leading to the now famous Science paper (2015, n 349). I am working with members of the International Neuroinformatics Coordinating Facility and Organization for Human Brain Mapping on good practices and reproducibility for functional MRI (GigaScience, 2015, 4), EEG, and clinical applications. I am also the administrator of imaging repositories (images and code) for Edinburgh imaging and ENBIT (www.enbit.ac.uk).
My work focuses on methodological development and applications for clinical neuroimaging (i) robust, reliable, protocols (ii) statistical and data processing (iii) applications and informatics solutions for day-to-day clinical neuroimagiong. I have a large interest in studying cognition (vision, audition, and language), brain disease (stroke, brain tumour, development disorders) and imaging techniques (MRI, PET, EEG).
