Personal profile

Biography

I am a psychometrician specialising in assessment and feedback. My three main areas of research are:

-Differential Attainment - what causes attainment gaps between groups in medical education? How can we better understand and reduce such gaps?

-Multi-site research - what can we learn by comparing different medical schools, deaneries, and postgraduate groups? Are some groups outperforming others on written or clinical examinations, and if so, why?

-Predictive validity - which parts of medical education predict future performance as a clinical worker? What can we learn about standards and remediation from the link between undergraduate performance, preparedness for practice, and success in the workplace?

I am a fellow of the HEA and teach undergraduate, MSc, MD and PhD students. I have collaborated with a range of UK and International Groups on medical education, including MRCP, RCPG, MSCAA, and the PSA.

I have been awarded a Teaching Innovation Award from the International Association for Medical Education for my work on OSCEs, a Critic's Choice Award from Medical Education, and given invited talks at ASME and to the GMC. You can find a list of my recent publications below.

I am the Programme Director of the Clinical Education PhD. If you would like to discuss possible supervision, please email me. I am also available for internal/external examining.

Our team tries to collaborate as widely as possible. If you would like to discuss working with us, or if you'd like a general chat about our projects or are looking for some advice, please email me.
