Dr Salter’s principal research interests lie in the culture of the later Middle Ages, focusing in particular on romance and the literature of traditional religion. He is the author of Holy and Noble Beasts: Encounters with Animals in Medieval Literature (Cambridge: D. S. Brewer, 2001), a study of the representation of animals in romance and saints’ lives.
He is currently writing a cultural history of the Franciscan Order in England, entitled St Francis and Cultural Memory: Catholicism and the English National Imagination, which is due to be published by Oxford University Press. In addition to the above, David has published essays on subjects as diverse as Shakespeare’s religious background, Anthony Van Dyck and William Hogarth, and film and gender studies.
