On registering as a general nurse in Leeds (RGN 1986) Elaine worked in intensive care and neurology prior to becoming a midwife in Leeds (RM 1988). After midwifery experience in Leeds and Edinburgh she qualified as a Health Visitor (RHV 1990) and worked in community settings in rural and urban parts of Scotland.
A Chief Scientist Office (CSO) health service research training fellowship (1992) enabled her to undertake doctoral studies at the University of Edinburgh examining Sense and Susceptibility: How mothers' view accidental injury risk and develop safety strategies for pre-school children (University of Edinburgh PhD1999). Elaine continued to work as a health visitor in Central Scotland during her doctoral studies.
In 1998 Elaine became a lecturer in Nursing and Midwifery with a particular remit for community and family nursing at the University of Stirling prior to her present appointment at the University of Edinburgh in 2002.
Elaine has significant administrative responsibilities along side her teaching within the University of Edinburgh, including taking up the post of School of Health and Social Science Director of Learning and Teaching in 2013. Elaine has directed both Masters and Undergraduate Programmes (2002-2009) and subsequently Elaine has been Convener of Exam Boards 2009-2013.
Beyond the University, Elaine hs been expert advisor to the Scottish Government Research Advisory Group for the Review of Nursing in the Community and she is also the Scottish representative for the UK Research Advisory Group of the Community Practitioners and Health Visitors Association (CPHVA). Elaine was an invited member of the NES Modernising Nursing in the Community Education SubGroup (MNiC)
Elaine is also an expert advisor to the Queens Nursing Institute Scotland (QNIS) Education and Professional Development Committee and she is the Honorary Secretary and a Trustee of the international organisation ICCHNR which organises International conferences for community health nursing research (ICCHNR). Elaine in collaboaration with ICCHNR and QNIS organsed the 5th International Conference on Community Health Nursing Research in Edinburgh, Scotland, entitled Transforming Community Health: the Nursing Impact on the 13-14th March 2013.
Elaine is interested in service organisation and delivery for quality healthcare, particularly in respect of health visiting, public health nursing and community nursing services.
Recent research has focused on leadership and team work in primary care and the community nursing setting.
Elaine has an interest in service user perspectives as well as those of the work force and has investigated people’s experiences of health and healthcare services in their communities. Elaine examined maternal perspectives of accidental childhood injury in her doctoral thesis. Subsequently she has been involved in a number of research studies examining the health care experiences of families from differing ethnic backgrounds, service organsiation, leadership and nursing education.
Studies completed March 2013 and 2014 considering user and carer involvement in practice assessment combined Elaine’s research interests in user and carers' views with her interest in the educational preparation of nurses.
Elaine particularly welcomes applications from potential PhD students in the following areas; service organisation and delivery and especially in realtion to community nursing services, leadership and team work in health services, users' persepctives of their care in repect of health services provided, research relating to improving student learning in clinical and academic settings.
