Biography

Dr Fiona Dobbie is a Senior Lecturer in Public Health and Director of Research for the Usher Institute. Based in the Centre for Population Health Science (CPHS), she conducts research, teaching and knowledge exchange in the design and evaluation of complex health behaviour change interventions, with a specific focus on addictions.  

Fiona joined the University of Edinburgh in November 2018 from the University of Stirling where she was a Senior Research Fellow with the Institute for Social Marketing and Health. Before returning to academia in 2011, Fiona held a broad public health and social research portfolio working across the public, private and voluntary research sector as both a research commissioner and a researcher.

Research Interests

Dr Dobbie is a public health and social sciences researcher with expertise and interest in three key areas: 1) topic expertise in the fields of gambling and nicotine research with a particular focus on the prevention of harm for vulnerable groups (children and young people in particular); 2) research methods expertise in qualitative social network research and; 3) applied expertise in the design and evaluation of complex health behaviour change interventions, with particualt expertise in process evaluation.

Teaching

Dr Dobbie is a Senior Lecturer in Public Health and leads two courses on the Master of Public Health Programme (on-line and on-campus) at the University of Edinburgh: Introduction to Health Promotion and ‘Developing and Evaluating Complex Interventions’. She also supervises Masters' level students on Master of Public Health Programmes (on-campus and online) and has PhD supervision experience at the University of Edinburgh.
