PhD projects

If you made any changes in Pure these will be visible here soon.

Personal profile

MA by Research in Film Studies, University of Newcastle (awarded 1998); DPhil in Media Studies, University of Sussex (awarded 2004).

Current Research Interests

I am a theorist and historian of queer visual culture. My specialist field is film studies, with a particular focus on experimental cinema and artists' film and video. From 2016 to 2019, I was the Project Leader of a pan-European queer history project called 'Cruising the Seventies: Unearthing Pre-HIV/AIDS Queer Sexual Cultures' (CRUSEV,, funded by HERA and the European Commission, which had research teams in Germany, Poland, Spain, and the UK. I am currently co-editing Queer Print in Europe (with Laura Guy) and The Richard Dyer Reader (with Jaap Kooijman), both forthcoming from Bloomsbury.

Before taking up my position at the University of Edinburgh, I was the coordinator of postgraduate studies at The Glasgow School of Art (2008-2012). Prior to this, I was a senior lecturer in screen studies at the University of Bristol (2005-2008).

Research students

I am currently supervising eight PhD students: Sequoia Barnes, Chase Ledin, Benoit Loiseau, Monica Lindsay-Perez, Sonny Ruggiero, Garry McLaughlin, Rose Dagul, and Teddy Hope.

Research Interests

My research and writing is mainly concerned with experimental cinema, and artists working with film and video. Recent journal articles include essays on cinema and waiting, James Benning and taxidermy, and slow horror films. Research for the 'Cruising the 70s' project resulted in journal articles and book chapters on Ron Peck's 1978 film Nighthawks, a 1980 tape-slide installation by Sunil Gupta entitled 'London Gay Switchboard', and an educational kit produced by the Tyneside branch of the Campaign for Homosexual Equality. I am currently writing a short book on Gregg Araki's film The Living End for the McGill-Queens book series Queer Film Classics.
