Andrew graduated from the University of Birmingham with a MSci Honours degree in Geology which included a year studying at the University of Auckland. Following a year out of studying he moved to Edinburgh to undertake a Masters by Research in hydrogeology and numerical modelling, which then led on to a PhD in coupled process modelling development for engineered barriers, and is currently employed at the University of Edinburgh as a post-doctoral research associate.
Andrew's research interests include the interaction of subsurface processes of fluid flow, rock mechanics, and heat and mass transport, and their influence on the extraction of different sources of energy and waste storage solutions. This includes an interest in the improvement of energy efficiency and development of renewable heat within the energy sector. He is also interested in geotechnical problems relating to coupled process phenomenon such as slope stability and volcanic edifice collapse.
In his current role, Andrew is developing the world-leading GeoReservoir Experimental Analogue Technology (GREAT) cell, a true triaxial experimental apparatus capable of investigating large (200mm diameter) cylindrical samples at representative subsurface conditions of stress, fluid pressure, and temperature. He is combining this with numerical modelling of coupled processes for geoenergy applications such as low enthalpy geothermal energy.
