My research in a nutshell

Investigating the mechanism of homogeneous chemical reactions, the design of new or improved chemical processes, and the development of new techniques and intrumentation to achieve this.


Guy Lloyd-Jones studied Applied Chemistry at Huddersfield Polytechnic, during which he spent a year at ICI Pharmaceuticals. He conducted his final year project with Professor Mike Page, who instilled in him a deep appreciation of the power of physical-organic chemistry. After graduating (BSc., 1989), Lloyd-Jones moved to Oxford to study under John Brown FRS, where he investigated the mechanism of Rh-catalysed hydroboration and hydrosilation of alkenes, and deconvoluted the mechanistic pathways for competing dehydrogenative boration and silation processes. On obtaining his doctorate (DPhil., 1992), he moved to Basel, Switzerland, under tenure of a Royal Society postdoc fellowship, to work with Andreas Pfaltz on asymmetric catalysis across a wide range of metal complexes, including Rh, W, Mo, Pd, Cu and Ni.  In 1996 he was appointed to a lectureship at the University of Bristol, from where he made broad-ranging contributions to organic and organometallic stereochemistry and mechanism. He was promoted to Reader in 2000, Professor in 2003, and Head of Organic and Biological Chemistry in 2012. In 2013 moved to Edinburgh to take up The Forbes Chair of Organic Chemistry. He was elected to the fellowships of the Royal Society (FRS) and the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE) in 2013 and 2015 respectively.
