Accepting PhD Students
PhD projects
I am actively seeking out Ph.D. students who are eager to pursue interdisciplinary research at the intersection of health and forced migration from a variety of global perspectives. My specific focus areas include forced migration, refugees, asylum seekers, international social work, health needs and services, and human rights.
I am a Social Work Lecturer at the School of Social and Political Sciences, University of Edinburgh (UoE). Before joining UoE, I held similar positions at Edinburgh Napier University and Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. I have a PhD in Social Work from the University of Edinburgh and an MSc in Social Work and Human Rights from the University of Gothenburg.
My research focuses on the health needs and challenges of forced migrants and refugees. Most of my recent publications are based on research in these areas, covering topics such as the impact of climate change on migration and health in the African context, vulnerability and resilience in refugee situations, gendered dimensions of health and gender-based violence among refugees, adolescent sexual behavior and reproductive health needs, the socioeconomic and psychosocial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on urban refugees in Uganda, mental health effects of COVID-19 among refugees, and the impact of the pandemic on women's rights and well-being. I aim to use interdisciplinary knowledge and mixed methods to amplify the voices of socially excluded groups, particularly forced migrants and refugees.
I am passionate about advocating for those living on the margins of society, which has led me to work on providing children with alternatives to life on the streets of Kampala. Recently, I collaborated with colleagues to research global challenges affecting low and middle-income countries (LMIC), with a focus on access to HIV/AIDS or TB care among refugees during the COVID-19 pandemic. I am also a member of the Global Refugee Health Research Network (GHRN), established jointly by UoE and UWS.
Additionally, I recently conducted consultancy and research to evaluate a project commissioned by the Royal Tropical Institute of the Netherlands (KIT), which aimed to advocate for the prevention of maternal mortality and morbidity in Uganda due to unsafe abortion.
