Personal profile

Biography

I joined University of Edinburgh as Chancellor's Fellow in June 2023. I was previously Lecturer/Assistant Professor and Ad Astra Fellow at University College Dublin, Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at University of Warwick, and Teaching Fellow in Contemporary and Postcolonial Literature at University of Birmingham. I have also taught at University of York. In 2022, I held a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science short-term fellowship at Aoyama Gakuin University, Tokyo.

My research is situated in the Environmental Humanities. I primarily write about water in modern and contemporary world literature. I am interested in literary representations of water crisis, water infrastructure and technology, water and the state, water justice, and alternative hydro-social futures. My second main interest is in Environmental Humanities perspectives on Palestinian and Israeli literature and visual culture. My PhD was co-supervised in Geography (Sheffield) and English (York) and my research continues to be shaped by both of these fields.

My work has been funded by the Leverhulme Trust, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, the British Academy-Royal Irish Academy Knowledge Frontiers programme, the White Rose Universities Consortium, and competitive internal funding schemes at UCD and University of York.

I am Associate Editor of the journal Environmental Humanities. I am also co-convenor of the Edinburgh Environmental Humanities Network, and an affiliate of the Edinburgh Futures Institute (EFI) and the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH).
