Personal profile

Biography

Dr. Stagg is an epidemiological methodologist for the infectious diseases (Reader/Associate Professor) who initially trained at the University of Cambridge in the life sciences (cell biology, immunology, virology; PhD) and later at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (epidemiology, MSc). She has worked with industry, and national and international policy making/influencing bodies (particularly the Scottish Parliament, National Institute for Health and Care Excellence UK, European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, and the World Health Organization). She has previously held a European Respiratory Society International Short-Term Research Training Fellowship and a National Institute for Health Research Postdoctoral Fellowship. She currently holds both a Chancellor’s Fellowship and Medical Research Council Career Development Award at the Usher Institute of the University of Edinburgh, as well as an honorary Associate Professorship at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and an honorary Senior Lectureship at University College London.

She is the co-chair of UK Academics and Professionals to End Tuberculosis with Prof. Bertie Squire, a member of the World Health Organization's core grouping for the European Tuberculosis Research Initiative, and a Fellow of the Young Academy of Europe.

Collaborative Activity

What do I do?

Dr. Stagg's group focusses on areas where the ‘facts’ that have underpinned our clinical practice and research for decades rest on an insufficient evidence base- assumption and conjecture. The group uses a wide-ranging toolbox of study design techniques (epidemiology) and statistical methods to work to fill such knowledge gaps, as well as working collaboratively with laboratory, mathematical modelling, anthropology, clinical and genetics colleagues. We make optimal use of pre-existing data sources and are largely focussed on infectious diseases as well as treatment optimisation.

What is the real world applicability of my research?

We have worked with the World Health Organization, European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, UK, to provide a solid evidence base for their clinical and public health guidelines.

How could this apply to commercial stakeholders?

We are experts in reviewing and summarising scientific knowledge within population health to provide pragmatic, but scientifically rigorous, determination of the need for and best approaches to products and further research in different settings.
