Biography

Dr Wright graduated from the University of Strathclyde in 2007 (MSci Chemistry) and remained at Strathclyde to complete his PhD advised by Professor Peter Skabara.

In April 2011 he began his first postdoctoral appointment in the group of Professors Ed Constable and Catherine Housecroft at the Universität Basel, Switzerland where he focussed on the synthesis of crown ether and EDTA derivatives which were incorporated into ion-sensitive field effect transistors, and new coordination complexes for dye-sensitised solar cells and light-emitting electrochemical cells.

In August 2013 he returned to the UK for a second postdoctoral appointment with Professor Martin Bryce at Durham University synthesising short oligomers of electron-rich and electron-poor heterocycles for organic light emitting devices exploiting exciplex emission, delayed fluorescence and room temperature phosphorescence.

He was appointed as a Lecturer in Chemistry at Loughborough University in November 2016. He moved to the University of Edinburgh in 2022 as Senior Lecturer in Materials Chemistry.

Research Interests

Research focusses upon the implications of three-dimensional shape on molecular material properties. In the context of organic electronics this is to optimise parameters such as charge transport in organic field effect transistors, absorption of sunlight and reducing recombination in organic solar cells, and improving quantum efficiencies and colour tuning in organic light emitting devices.

We perform the synthesis of new organic and organometallic molecules with structures ranging from completely 2D to truly 3D and study their properties using electrochemical and photophysical experiments and microscopy.
