I am interested in how students learn and how we teach STEM subjects at university. I trained as a petrologist and volcanologist in Canada, and during my masters, I discovered a love for teaching and later pursued a doctorate in geoscience education at the University of Canterbury (New Zealand). My PhD focused on how geoscience students develop a range of skills through authentic learning and role-play. Since then, I have researched STEM education in a variety of research and teaching roles, including science communication, antarctic science, engineering education, planetary science, and mathematics. I also specialise in supporting other academics in their journey with researching their teaching (SoTL) and support the Edinburgh Teaching Award (EdTA), which is our local teaching excellence recognition scheme. Currently, I am researching a variety of STEM teaching case studies, including volcanology education, the transition for first-year mathematics students, and geography, earth and environmental sciences employability.
