Research Interests

I will be investigating responses to negative reinforcers using temporal difference learning models that incorporate latent variables necessary for avoidance learning, including aversive prediction errors. By fitting these models to data from behavioural experiments in which subjects learn how to respond to warning stimuli (threats) in order to avoid aversive contingencies (punishments), I will determine whether quantifiably enhanced reactivity to aversive stimuli is related to high trait anxiety - an established risk factor for anxiety disorders. I will also use model-based functional magnetic resonance imaging to explore the neural substrates of variability in threat reactivity and punishment avoidance.
