Nanoscale Characeterization of Surfaces Using Optical Reflection Spectroscopy

Exploitation of specific experimental geometry, sample symmetry and suitably polarized light allows atomic scale surface modification to be studied with reflection spectroscopy using visible light. This approach allows detailed characterization (with simple, inexpensive and robust instrumentation) in hostile environments where in situ and real time study is extremely difficult (and often impossible) with conventional surface science instrumentation.

Recent work has demonstrated optical detection of atomic defects created by thermal excitation, molecular adsorption and radiation damage. We have also devised a new method of detection and study of chiral surface modification.
