Jane Roberts has worked on The Collected Letters of Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle since 2003; she began as a part-time proof-reader and research assistant; she became an editor in 2007.

Previously she worked in bookselling, and later as a publisher’s sales representative. In between she combined parenthood with a variety of part-time and voluntary jobs, mostly working in advice centres. She then took an MA Hons in History at Edinburgh University as a mature student.

She has written two papers for the Carlyle Society, ‘The Carlyles and their Servants’ (2005) and ‘John A. Carlyle, Lynchpin of the Carlyle Family’ (2011), and contributed the ‘Introduction’ to vol. 40, Carlyle Letters (2012)
