Biography

Dr Jano van Hemert, FRSE is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and a Senior Member of IEEE.  He has worked in several universities and companies where he always collaborated at the interface of academia and industry. His main interest is in processing data to distil information into the knowledge required to drive positive impact.

From 2022 to 2023, Dr van Hemert was an Applied Research Manager at the Amazon Development Centre Scotland in Edinburgh. From 2010 to 2022, he directed the research at Optos—a medical device company—where his team commercialised many novel hardware and software features for retinal imaging. From 2010 to 2023, he was an Honorary Fellow of the University of Edinburgh in recognition of his leadership in the research programme of the UK National e-Science Centre from 2006 to 2010, which was supported by a prestigious EPSRC Platform Grant. Before 2006, he held research associate and fellow posts at the National Research Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science of the Netherlands, The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research and the Vienna University of Technology. From 2005 until 2011 he was a visiting researcher at the Human Genetics Unit in Edinburgh of the UK's Medical Research Council.

In 2022, Dr van Hemert was recognised as an IEEE Computer Society Distinguished Contributor. In 2018, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. In 2013, he was elevated to Senior Member of the IEEE.
