Biography

John is Deputy Director of the Scottish Collaboration for Public Health Research and Policy (SCPHRP), and Lecturer in Public Health in the School of Health in Social Science.  John manages the core Team within SCPHRP alongside the Director Dr Ruth Jepson. 

John's work focuses upon three broad areas:  1) Public health intervention development and evaluation, 2) Public health issues affecting teenagers and young adults, and 3) Uptake of research findings in policy and practice.  John is actively involved in initiatives to increase the use of evidence in policy and practice, including the recently established Public Health Evidence Network, working alongside NHS Health Scotland and other collaborators. 

John has a PhD in psychology from University College London, where he developed a theory-based intervention to increase staff hand-hygiene behaviour in NHS hospitals in England and Wales.  He also has an MSc in Social Psychology from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and an honours degree in Psychology from the University of Stirling.

John currently teaches on the Masters in Public Health within the Centre for Population Health Sciences. He is co-lead, with Dr Larry Doi, for the elective: ‘Developing and evaluating complex public health interventions’.  John is also course organiser for the Dissertation component of the on-campus and online distance learning MSc Children and Young People's Mental Health and Psychological Practice within the School of Health in Social Science.  

John is a Chartered Psychologist and Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society.
