Biography

I obtained my PhD from the University of Leicester in 1984 and undertook postdoctoral training with Ken Gross (Roswell Park Memorial Institute, Buffalo, USA, 1985-88) and Detlev Ganten (University of Heidelberg, Germany 1988-90) during which I was awarded a BMFT ‘Young Investigator’ programme grant. In 1990 and was appointed as a senior group leader in the newly-established AFRC Centre for Genome Research at the University of Edinburgh (1990-98). As a Co-PI for the Wellcome Trust Cardiovascular Research Initiative (1998) I was awarded a Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellowship (1998-2009) and moved to the Faculty of Medicine as a Professorial Fellow. I was awarded a Personal Chair in Molecular Physiology (1999) and was appointed director of the Wellcome Trust Cardiovascular Research Initiative (Edinburgh) (2001-09). I served on the Wellcome Trust Physiology and Pharmacology grants committee (1997-02) and Strategy Panel (2004-7). I was Head of the Centre for Cardiovascular Science at the University of Edinburgh (2004-09) and am currently the director of the BHF Centre for Research Excellence in Edinburgh (2008-). I was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2006 and my research interests focus on the molecular mechanisms of blood pressure regulation and in particular the genetics of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system.

My research in a nutshell

My research focusses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms that regulate blood pressure. We use molecular, cellular and in vivo tools, including state-of-the-art imaging and genetic techniques to understand how key genes work, to dissect pathways through which they operate, and to understand the function of specialized cells that secrete hormones and control fluid and salt balance.
