Personal profile

Research Interests

I am Professor of Cosmology at the Institute for Astronomy, of which I was Head between 2007 and 2013. This Institute is part of the School of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Edinburgh, and is also part of the Scottish Universities Physics Alliance.

My research interests are in theoretical and observational cosmology: large-scale structure; galaxy formation and evolution; evolution of active galaxies; gravitational lensing. I was the UK Chairman of the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey, which transformed our knowledge of galaxy clustering in the early years of the 21st Century, winning the 2008 RAS Group Achievement Award.

I am a Fellow of the Royal Society and the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and the author of the postgraduate textbook 'Cosmological Physics'.

Teaching

I have taught a variety of undergraduate courses since I joined the staff of the University of Edinburgh in 1998: Astronomy 1B; Mathematics for Physics 1; Vectors, Tensors & Fields; Quantum Mechanics; Physics of Stars & Nebulae; Astrophysical Cosmology; Astronomical Statistics; Advanced Cosmology. I am currently teaching Fourier Analysis. Notes for all these courses can be found at www.roe.ac.uk/~jap/teaching
