Research Interests

My research is in Interaction Design and related areas of Human Computer-Interaction, Social Sciences and Humanities. My work is centred on the design of physical-digital artefacts that enable people to engage with speculative scenarios and complex issues such as implications of autonomous systems. I am particularly interested in socio-technological narratives and how they can influence and be shaped by design practice. I'm currently focused on three areas of research:

Inclusive Technologies: how digital systems can be designed to better integrate groups that are at the periphery of dominant narratives of technological development. Recent projects include Bitbarista, the Autonomous Energy Devices (Gigbliss Hairdryers and Karma Kettles), CariCrop, and my participation as a supervisor in the DCODE network.

Temporal Design: as an attempt to look at time as emerging out of relations between natural, cultural, economic and political forces. The concept was the basis of my PhD, and was discussed in subsequent publications at InteractionsDRS2016 proceedings, and Design Studies. Recent activities are captured in the Temporal Design website, as the Design Meets Evolutionary Ecology project that combined my interest in time and ecologies.

Ecologies, Nature and Biodesign: how the consideration of biological and ecological systems can expand our understanding of human and other-than-human worlds. Projects include Biopolis and Design with DNA Data Ecologies.
