Research Interests

My research is in Interaction Design and related areas of Human Computer-Interaction, Social Sciences and Humanities. My work is centred on the design of artefacts and processes that aim to enable people to engage with speculative scenarios and complex issues such as implications of autonomous systems. I am particularly interested in socio-technical narratives and how they can influence and be shaped by design practice. I'm currently focused on three areas of research:

Ecologies and bio-related design: how the consideration of biological and ecological systems can expand our understanding of technology and more-than-human worlds. Projects include Biopolis, Design with DNA Data Ecologies, and Designing Temporal Ecologies.

Inclusive technologies: how digital systems can be designed to better integrate groups that are at the periphery of dominant narratives of technological development. Past projects include Bitbarista, the Autonomous Energy Devices (Gigbliss Hairdryers and Karma Kettles), CariCrop, and DCODE.

Temporal Design: as an attempt to look at time as emerging out of relations between natural, cultural, economic and political forces. The concept was the basis of my PhD, and was discussed in subsequent publications at InteractionsDesign Studies and CHI. Recent activities are captured in the Temporal Design website, as the Design Meets Evolutionary Ecology project that combined my interest in time and ecologies.
