Biography

Dr Leah Macaden is a senior nurse academic with over 30 years of experience.  She was a Professor in India’s highest-ranking College of Nursing and a WHO Collaborating Centre at the Christian Medical College with a wide range of academic, clinical, management and research expertise until 2011.

She joined the University of Edinburgh in 2022 as a Senior Lecturer in Nursing Studies. Since moving to Scotland in 2011, she has worked at the university of Stirling and University of the Highlands & Islands where she successfully navigated two unchartered territories: research integrated nurse education in the care of older people and online / blended / bichronous approaches to dementia education for workforce development.

Her expertise includes innovation and research collaboration with interdisciplinary experts in the codesign of educational resources to support three key areas in gerontological nursing: dementia; dignity, sensory impairments and end of life care.

She is a Churchill Fellow in the UK [2019]; Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing [FAAN] and a National Teaching Fellow [NTF] of Advance HE, UK [2022] in recognition of her innovative approaches in education and reserach integrated teaching for workforce development in the care of older people.

Her external positions include: Vice Lead of the Northern Nursing Education Network of the UArctic, member of the International Nursing Advisory Board, Gulf Medical University, Ajman – UAE, Expert Reviewer of professional frameworks / graduate nurse education for the UAE Ministry of Education and Seoul National University, South Korea and an elected Executive Committee Member of the Scottish Dementia Research Consortium.

Research students

I currently supervise 10 PhD students - mostly international students with projects on dementia, end of life care, ageing, nurse led interventions, spiritual care, lived experiences with long term conditions. 

Teaching

I teach across the undergraduate, post graduate and PhD programmes in Nursing across a range of subjects including dementia, sensory impairments, dignity, end of life care, research methods, policy and leadership.
