Biography

Assistant Principal Global Health and Director of the Global Health Academy

Management:  As Director of the Global Health Academy I have responsibility for overseeing the numerous global health initiatives across the University,  and for supporting programmes and global health communities of practice who work in partnership with the Academy.  

Co-Director of the Global Compassion Initiative The Initiative researches the science of  compassion in all disciplines and works with a global community of scholars to establish strategies for embedding compassion in organisations and systems. 

Lead for the Planetary Health strategy developing multi-disciplinary work across sectors

I have been involved in developing a number of new online programmes, online and blended courses and MOOCs.  

Research:  Skills in rapid appraisal methodologies, qualitative and ethnographic research.

Areas of research:

Palliative care: including global and national policies, and health system priorities. The mainstreaming of palliative care into health services in low and middle-income countries.

I lead the Palliatiev care in a Changing Climate group.

Health system strengthening, including integrated and person-centred care

Planetary Health:  concerned with the intersection and interconnections between the health of humans and the health of the planet and the ways in which the flourishing of all life depends and is shaped on the environmental, political, biodiversity, economic, social, and spiritual determinants and drivers.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the role and significance of compassion as the glue underpinning the goals. The role of faith communities in contributing to the SDGs

Before coming back into the University in 2009 I worked for the Scottish Government as the Senior Health Advisor in the International Development Team with a special remit for the Scottish Government's National Partnership with Malawi, and in NHS Lothian Public Health Directorate as a specialist in International Global Public Health. I led the NHS Lothian Zambia Partnership on HIV/AIDS.  

In the 1990s I worked in Kenya for 5 years in a rural hospital as a lead for community health working in Circumcision Programmes, HIV/AIDS and Palliative Care.
