Liz Sutherland began work on The Collected Letters of Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle in 1999 as a part-time research assistant, becoming an editor in 2006.
Previously she taught physical education and competed internationally in athletics. She gained an MA Hons. in Scottish Literature and French as a mature student at Edinburgh University. Her papers to the Carlyle Society are ‘As others dress to live, he lives to dress’ (2005), ‘Jane’s Gentleman Callers’ (2006) and ‘Who Did They Think They Were; Genealogy and the Carlyle Letters’ (2011); she contributed the ‘Introduction’ to vol. 41, Carlyle Letters (2013)
