Dr Luke Daines is a GP-researcher and health data scientist who leads the Primary Care Data Discovery Group. He specialises in prediction and proactive monitoring using primary care and multimodal health data (including wearables), with a focus on respiratory conditions.

Completing his GP training in 2015, Luke joined the University of Edinburgh as an Academic Clinical Fellow in General Practice. He contributed to the diagnosis chapter of the British Thoracic Society / Scottish Intercollegiate Guideline Network asthma guideline and developed his interest in asthma diagnosis during a Master’s in Public Health (2016/17), including a travel fellowship at the Technical University of Munich.

He was awarded a Chief Scientist Office Clinical Academic Fellowship (2017) to derive and validate a clinical prediction model for asthma diagnosis in primary care and completed his PhD in January 2021. A grant from Asthma+Lung UK/Innovate UK enabled this work to be developed into a clinical decision support tool (2019–2023).

As a post-doctoral researcher, Luke expanded his expertise in health data science and real-world evidence through the PHOSP-COVID consortium and the EAVE II research group, investigating long COVID and its long-term outcomes. He has been awarded a Wellcome Early Career Award (starting October 2026) to use continuous wearable monitoring and machine learning to define “digital signatures” that distinguish recovery from deterioration after acute asthma, supporting proactive post-discharge monitoring.

He is research staff champion for early career researchers within the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine and sits on the Usher Institute research committee. Alongside his academic work, Luke practises as a GP at Murieston Medical Practice.
