Current Research Interests
Mark is interested in the interface between the work of general practice and primary care mental health services and the communities they work with. As such he is engaged in a number of topic areas:
- Health Inequities
- Community Mental Health practice and services
- Evaluating complex health interventions
- Quality improvement in GP
- The integration of health and social care
- The role of social science methodology, particularly ethnography, in developing and deepening our understanding and praxis of care.
Dr Mark Gotink graduated from the University of Groningen, The Netherlands, in 2014 with a MSc in Medicine. He gained further clinical experience in hospital paediatrics in a district teaching hospital and subsequently in primary care/public health paediatrics in the Netherlands. In 2018 he started General Practitioner training in NHS Lothian and the Borders.
During his medical studies he completed a further bachelor degree in the Philosophy of Medicine at the University of Groningen, with a thesis exploring notions of difference in medical diagnosis and classification systems. He also interned in the School of Public Health at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa, within the CHESAI Collaboration for Health Systems Analysis and Innovation, working on a project analysing the implementation of key performance indicators in clinics of a Cape Town subdistrict. In 2017 he completed an MSc in Medical Anthropology at the University of Edinburgh with a dissertation investigating the praxis of integrating health and social care in Scotland.
Currently, Mark works as a Clinical Lecturer in General Practice and Primary Care within the Centre for Population Health Sciences in the Ushe Institute, combining his clinical training as a GP and developing his research portfolio with a view to PhD training in a transdisciplinary field.
