I was born and educated in Edinburgh before completing an MA (Social Sciences) and a Professional Graduate Diploma in Education (Primary) at the University of Glasgow. I took up my first two posts as a primary teacher in 2006 with the Scottish Borders Council before spending the following 11 years teaching and living in Moscow in Russia, Guangzhou in China, and Hong Kong. During this time, I taught children in kindergarten through to Year 6 and was appointed the Literacy Coordinator. I developed an interest in how children learn, specifically the roles of play and literacy in their learning which prompted me to undertake an MEd Education (Early Years) at the University of Aberdeen graduating with Distinction and then enrolling on the Doctorate of Education (EdD) at the University of Strathclyde. My Doctorate study is focused on young children’s oral language use and development when in outdoor, natural environments. On returning to Scotland, I worked for both the City of Edinburgh Council and the Scottish Borders Council in early years and nurseries supporting practitioners and children alike, and it was in these roles that I saw the positive impact on the children's development when they spent time outdoors in natural environments. I started working at the University of Dundee as a Lecturer on the undergraduate and postgraduate ITE programmes and took on the role of the Professional Practice Convenor for the undergraduate programme. In 2023 I joined the University of Edinburgh as a Lecturer in Primary Education (Primary Literacies).
